ONVUO / RESOURCES
When is data actually connected?
An organization can bring information into one place and still struggle to answer everyday questions. Collection alone does not explain what information means or how it relates to the work.
01 / DEFINITION
Agree on what a record means.
An ‘order’ may mean an initial request in one system and an approved commitment in another. ‘Available’ might mean a physical quantity or a quantity not yet reserved. Before combining records, establish their definition, state and origin. When definitions differ, show the difference rather than turning it into a number that appears agreed.
02 / RELATIONSHIP
Connect information to its dependencies.
A shipment’s arrival date rarely explains its full significance. You may need to understand the demand it serves, its supplier and the work waiting for it. The task determines which relationships matter. Everything does not need to connect to everything else; a person needs to trace the context behind their decision.
03 / OWNERSHIP
Make uncertainty visible.
Missing data, delayed updates and conflicting records belong in the picture. Establish who reviews the issue and when the information is appropriate to rely on. Being clear about its limits helps users more than hiding those limits behind an apparently complete interface.
TO BEGIN
Choose one decision.
Write down a recurring decision, the information it uses, the systems it comes from and the people responsible for it. This small inventory reveals which definitions and relationships deserve attention first.
